Burning Smell

In both automatic and manual transmissions, a burning smell can indicate a problem. Manual transmissions rely on the driver to engage the clutch when shifting gears. Improper driving techniques can cause the clutch to burn, emitting a very distinct smell.

In automatic transmissions, a burning smell is often indicative of overheated transmission fluid. Unlike a manual, automatic transmissions rely on a special hydraulic fluid to control shifting and keep the gearbox cool.

Slipping Gears

In both automatics and manuals, slipping gears is an indication of a problem. It’s easy to tell when your transmission is slipping. As you drive, the RPMs of the engine will increase, but the car will not go faster, and may even slow down.

Rough Shifting

Rough shifting is another common sign of transmission problems. Normally, automatic transmissions shift smoothly, but a lack of maintenance or other internal problems can cause gear changes to become harsh.

Leaks

If you notice a puddle under your vehicle, one culprit could be a leaking gearbox. Grab a paper towel and dab some of the puddle. If the fluid is reddish brown, there’s a good chance its transmission fluid. It’s important to remember that oil, coolant, power steering fluid, and brake fluid can also leak, so it’s important to have an expert take a look if you are not sure.

Unusual Sounds

Another common sign of transmission problems is strange sounds. You might hear and audible clunking when the transmission shifts, or hear gear grinding. Any abnormal sound coming from the transmission is a good indicator that it’s time to get your car to a trusted repair shop.
